I'm finally coming down just a skosh from my euphoria after this incredible photoshoot and I'm still amazed at how well it all came together in the end.
It started with an idea and a late night text to my lovely friend, Dani. I had an idea and wanted one of the first shoots in my new studio to be a Victorian inspired look. Immediately I knew I wanted Dani for my model. Thankfully I have amazing and trusting friends.
With my muse was on board, I began making designs for the dress I'd envisioned. Now please do not suffer under the delusion that I am in anyway the kind of woman who possess sewing skills. Nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, the last time I actually picked up a needle and thread was freshman Home Ec.
As it is with anything, so much of what I have learned has been simply by trying new things and and throwing myself into the deep end. I’ve come to learn that I like that challenge, so after several designs, multiple re-workings, and somewhere around 60 yards of tulle, I had something resembling the image in my head.
Now try to imagine my excitement watching as my amazingly talented makeup artist, Summer, started bringing my vision for Dani’s look to life. With her fair skin and flaxen eyelashes and eyebrows, Dani personified the Victorian lady portrait I wanted to create.
Summer did a wonderful job bringing the look together. We chose a neutral palette for the make up, keeping with Dani’s already fair skin. Lastly, can we talk about THAT hair? Dani's naturally curly hair looked straight out of a Victorian portrait.
Once everything was in place and I finally had Dani in front of my camera, I admit, it was hard for me to keep from getting a little choked up.
For the backdrop, I chose a soft, classic neutral tone to compliment the dress and make-up.
Seeing the final images truly causes delight to burst out all over my face to the point of outright giddiness.
I could not have done any of it without the help of a wild and super creative team (of course, a little champaign doesn't hurt, either) who went so far beyond what I asked of them.
Summer: your work speaks for itself. The truth is, the RIGHT hair and makeup artist improves the quality and results of images drastically. I love knowing our clients are in excellent hands.
To my indispensable assistant, Darien: Darien, Darien, Darien. Girl, I would swear that you are psychic. Every time I even THOUGHT of something, it seemed you were there with it before I could finish getting the words out. I cannot imagine having done it without you. Thank you for your hard work, your enthusiasm, your "juggling act" and for coming through for me in a BIG way (a’hem, the professional photographer who left her camera battery at home). Nothing is more satisfying than working along side someone who loves the creative process as much as I do. Besides, not many people have the skills to hold up a light with one hand, blow a model's hair out for dramatic affect with a hair dryer in the other, while balancing a reflector with one foot- AND you did it all laying on your belly so that I could shoot over the top of you . . . . you have my respect. (Please check out Darien Marie Photography, she is a talented photographer in her own right.)
Finally to Dani: I am grateful beyond words for your trust to follow me along this little adventure. You will always have a place in my heart . . . and my portfolio.
What’s your “dream” shoot look like? If you can conceive it, I can bring it to life for you.
